Speakers for small tv.?

I have just purchased a nice small tv for my kitchen but the only downside is with it being small is that the sound is `tinny`. Would I get a more reasonably better sound if I got a pair of speakers and ran them from the headphone socket? If so would I need a splitter for the socket? (I`m a bit of a dumb blonde on technical stuff)!
